"I'm not so sure about using a "home baker."

Sure I would love to have a storefront but there are many reasons why I don't, the first being that I don't want the overhead. If I have to pay more to run my business, then I have to charge more. I also enjoy the freedom of being able to volunteer at my kids schools, be home with them if they're not well and not having to worry if I have enough orders to cover the bills.
These are just a small number of reasons why I choose to have a private in-home studio. But you can know that you will always receive a quality product from me! I am happy to provide references from many satisfied customers.
Cakes by Z is a licensed, insured and inspected by the Department of Agriculture.
How much do your cakes cost?
It depends on the size, flavors, filling and complexity of the cake. Fondant cakes are more expensive than buttercream, tiered cakes are more expensive than non-tiered. Since no two cakes are alike, its hard to say what any one would cost without finding out exactly what you want first.
Why are cakes so expensive?
Think of it in terms of a restaurant. Dessert at a basic restaurant usually runs anywhere from $3 - $7 per serving and they are mass-produced. I'm making you a custom creation where you've chosen the design and flavors you want and is fresh baked with quality ingredients. Unlike grocery store cakes, I do everything from start to finish and your cake is NEVER frozen.
Do you make low fat, gluten-free, sugar-free, egg-free, dairy-free or nut-free cakes?
Nope, it's cake. I make it full of fat and sugar so its delicious! BUT stay tuned for Gluten-Free - I am testing out some recipes and hope to add it to my line.
I also do not have a nut-free kitchen and cannot guarantee that there will not be cross contamination. I understand the increasing needs of allergy sufferers and recommend you use specialty suppliers for your specific needs. I can provide ingredient listings for those wishing to send cupcakes or cookies into schools that require the information.
Do you do tastings?
Yes, for weddings and other large events serving 80 or more people or costing $250 and up. Please contact me to set up an appointment. Tastings must be paid for in advance using this link -
Do your cakes require refrigeration?
Most cakes require refrigeration but can be stored at room temperature for several hours as is the case with wedding cakes.
Can you match specific colors?
I will do my best to match your color, but it may not be a exact. Please provide a swatch or sample.

Where do you/have you delivered?
In addition to private homes, hotel venues and restaurants, I have delivered to Glen Gardens, Fredericksburg Square, The Gauntlet, Rockhill Plantation, Lake of the Woods, Muckamoore Horse Farm, Brocks, National Museum of the Marine Corp, Teen Challenge Farm, Potomac Point Winery, Aquia Harbour, Old House Vineyards, Blandfield Plantation, Lake Land'Or, University of Mary Washington Jepson Center, Stevenson Ridge, The Inn at Kelly's Ford, Northern Virginia and Maryland.
I don't have a set limit on how far I'll drive to bring you your creation but the further I have to go, the more delivery will cost.
What types of payments do you accept?
Credit Cards, PayPal, Money Orders, Certified Checks or cash. Personal checks are accepted at least 2 weeks prior to the pickup date. A $25 fee will be charged for insufficient funds and orders will not be filled until paid in cash. Please use this link to make deposits and payments via PayPal -
Do you require a deposit on orders?
All orders require a 50% deposit at least one week in advance.
Orders are on a first-come, first-served basis and not considered booked until a deposit is received.
Are the deposits refundable?
Orders under $100 - Deposit is refunded, less a 10% fee, if cancelled 2 weeks or more prior to the pickup/delivery date. If cancelled less than 2 weeks beforehand, the deposit will not be refunded but can be credited towards a future order for three months following the cancelled order.
Orders over $100 - If cancelled 30 days or more prior to the pickup/delivery date, any payments made will be refunded less a $100 fee. Cancellations less than 30 days will forfeit any payments made.
If an order is not cancelled, the deposit will be forfeit and no credit will be issued.
Are you a licensed baker?
Cakes by Z LLC is a private, by appointment only, studio and was incorporated on May 26, 2009 in the state of Virginia and holds a State inspection report for the kitchen. Since Cakes by Z is a small business, Spotsylvania County does not require a business license, so the inspection report serves as such.
